The removal of the factory base pad from a Glock magazine is not an easy task. Anyone familiar with Glock magazines knows they are not easy to disassemble and clean. Without the use of proper tools to take it apart you can easily damage the magazine during this process. Dirt and grime will eventually work their way you're your magazine tubes and these will need to be cleaned to guarantee 100 percent functional reliability.

The removal of the factory base pad from a Glock magazine is not an easy task. Anyone familiar with Glock magazines knows they are not easy to disassemble and clean. Without the use of proper tools to take it apart you can easily damage the magazine during this process. Dirt and grime will eventually work their way you're your magazine tubes and these will need to be cleaned to guarantee 100 percent functional reliability.
The tabs on both sides of the magazines are difficult to compress and slide the factory base pad over. It became clear rather quickly that you will require some form of tool that would at the very least compress slightly the sides of the magazine body in the vicinity of the base pad retaining tabs to assist with base pad removal. A bit of searching revealed the GTUL Glock magazine disassembly tool.

The GTUL is a plastic sleeve in which the Glock magazine slides into with the base pad facing up. The GTUL tool has two compression points that line up with the base pad retaining tabs on the Glock magazine and when you squeeze the GTUL in the palm of your hand, the compression points provide enough compression on the sides of the magazine to assist in removing the base pads from the magazine. As you squeeze the GTUL in the palm of your hand you insert the GTUL take down tool and compress the retaining plate into the body of the magazine. This technique works perfectly for all calibres of Glock magazine.
Once you insert the disassembly tool, position the tool so the tip of the tool is located between the forward body of the magazine and the retaining plate. When you do so, then compress the GTUL take down tool and apply forward pressure until the magazine base pad comes loose from the magazine body and slides forward off the magazine. This technique provides you the leverage necessary to remove the base pad and keeps the magazine insert plate out of the way during the removal process. After trying this technique, removing the magazine base pads has become a much easier task to undertake.

Glock Slide Removal Tool
As well as the magazine base removal tool GTUL also make a Glock Slide Removal Tool ( STUL ), a simple yellow polymer device, with which shooters can disassemble the slide from the frame with ease. The Slide Removal Tool ( STUL ) slips onto the frame of the pistol and holds on with tension right on top of the two takedown tabs on the frame. Rather than using the tips of your thumb and index finger to pull down these tabs, all while holding the slide slightly to the rear, the STUL gives the user a much wider and firmer hold, making it significantly easier. The STUL fits all Glock models and will be a welcome addition in any range bag or cleaning kit for all Glock users and owners.

The GTUL ( pronounced "G-tool" ) is a magazine takedown system developed for use with all calibres of Glock magazines. The GTUL tool is available in two sizes. One size will fit all 9mm and .40 S&W Glock magazines. The other size will fit all other calibres sizes of Glock magazines. The GTUL tool fits snugly around the base of the magazine and two steps on the interior surface grip the sides of the magazine tube.
The take down tool and cleaning brush with a 1.25″ long metallic pin on the underside of the brush handle is used to push through the hole on the underside of the magazine to release the floor plate retaining pin. The tough polymer tool provides room for the user to compress the tool and the magazine body tube, thus relieving the locking tabs from the recesses that hold the floor plate onto the magazine. This precise constriction protects the integrity of those locking tabs and recesses.
After sliding the floor plate from the bottom of the magazine and removing the magazine insert, spring and follower, the user may then scrub the inside of the magazine tube with the bristled cleaning brush to remove dirt, dust, powder residue and other contaminants that could inhibit proper magazine function. After re-inserting the follower, spring and magazine insert, the ring can then be used to help slide the floor plate back into place by again compressing the magazine tube.
The GTUL tool makes disassembly and cleaning of Glock magazines much easier. In the picture the magazine disassembly tool is (obviously) the red device. What you can't see so clearly is the nubs of plastic that squeeze in the sides of the magazine in just the right place on either side to release the base plate. To accomplish magazine disassembly, here's what you do:
- Make sure the magazine is empty of all ammunition
- Insert the magazine into the GTUL device so that the front of the magazine is point toward the small opening of the GTUL
- With the magazine fully inserted, use the punch on the end of the cleaning brush to push the locking plate out of place, up into the magazine
- Squeeze the GTUL so that the small opening is closed together
- Use the punch on the handle of the cleaning brush to lever off the magazine base plate.
Pay attention and always wear eye protection because the locking plate and magazine spring are going to come out under the spring tension of the magazine spring once the magazine base plate is removed.
For those of you who have had your Glocks for years and have never disassembled your magazines, you are in for a potentially rude surprise, as the insides of the magazine bodies will be filthy and the magazine springs will be dirty as well. You might be surprised at how much gunk you find up under the magazines follower. Clean the locking plate, base plate and follower as you would any other part of your Glock. You can use a gun cleaning solvent or simply hot soapy water. For the magazine spring and the magazine body use a quality solvent cleaner and the brush provided in the GTUL cleaning kit.

In the handle of the brush there is a punch extension. That relieves you of having to dig out a separate punch tool to perform the magazine base plate disassembly. The stiff bristled nylon brush is sized to provide plenty of friction inside the magazine body. Wear eye protection and pay attention to the angle you hold the magazine body as you run the brush back and forth. Small droplets of solvent and dirt will fly about as the bristles clear the magazine body with each stroke back and forth. In short order you'll have your magazines clean and in pristine condition. Many people overlook this one very important part of their pistols when it comes to basic maintenance and cleaning the inside of the magazine. The magazine of the pistol can pick up a lot of dirt due to the fact that it is often dropped free of the pistol onto the ground during a reload, picking up all manner of dirt and debris. Glock Magazine Cleaning
The two GTUL disassembly tools are designed to disassemble all calibres of Glock magazines. The kit is made up of the U shaped GTUL and a nylon magazine brush with an integral punch at the base of its grip. Used together, both of these tools make the tricky job of disassembling and cleaning a Glock magazine incredibly easy, which we have broken down here into three steps.
Step 1
Before beginning, make sure you are wearing eye protection and that your Glock magazines are empty of all ammunition. Slip the red synthetic U shaped GTUL over the top and down the body of the magazine. Ensure that the markings on the GTUL are facing up and that the magazine's front face is facing downward and away from the open part of the GTUL.
Step 2
While firmly holding the magazine in your support hand, take the magazine brush and use the punch on its base to fully depress the magazine's retaining button on the bottom of the floor plate. Using your support hand to squeeze together the sides of the GTUL, pull downward with the magazine brush to push the floor plate off the magazine tube. At this point, set down the magazine brush and use your thumb to capture the spring as you slide off the magazine floor plate. Be careful as the magazine spring is under tension.

Step 3
You will now have removed the retaining plate, spring and follower. You can now use the nylon bristle brush to thoroughly scrub the inside of the magazine body as well as the other assorted parts. Reassemble the magazine in reverse order, and make sure that youDO NOTlubricate the inside of the magazine body or the follower with any form of oil or other lubrication as this will only assist in retaining all manor of dirt and debris. Your magazines are designed to operate properly dry and free from any form of lubricant.
As Glock users know Glock floor plates are held in place with moulded in tabs on the magazine tube that protrude into little divots in the floor plate. Without some way of holding these tabs in, getting the magazine apart turns into difficult proposition.
The use of the GTUL is that it ensures that you apply the proper force to the magazine in the correct location, minimizing the chances of damaging the magazine.
